Health Benefits of Vitamin B5 Vitamin B5, also known as Pantothenic acid, is present in all living cells and important to cell metabolism.  The name pantothenic acid comes from the Greek word meaning “everywhere”, referring to its wide availability in foods. It is stable to moist heat and oxidation but destroyed by acids, such as vinegar or alkalis such as baking soda.  It is also destroyed by dry heat.  So, in many wholefoods, Vitamin B5 is readily available. This vitamin is also produced in the intestine quite readily, if you have a healthy gut bacteria (microbiome). What Affects Absorption?   Health Benefits of Vitamin B3 As mentioned in our previous information leaflets on the Vitamin B family, B3 is also a water soluble vitamin. Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, was first isolated during oxidization of nicotine from tobacco, and was thus given the name nicotinic acid vitamin.  Shortly it’s name was shortened to Niacin.  However, it is important to note that this vitamin is not remotely related to the molecule nicotine! This vitamin is one of the most stable of the B vitamins in our body and is resistant to heat, light, air, acid and alkaline conditions. What Affects Absorption?   Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) This vitamin is an orange-yellow crystal which is more stable than thiamin.  This is how Riboflavin got it’s name flavus which in Latin means yellow.  You will notice this when you take it, your urine is usually a bright yellow-green florescent colour since excess intake  – usually as little as 50mg – 100mg, is easily excreted in the urine.  (Remember, from last week, the Vitamin B family are all water soluble vitamins).
