  Are Organic Foods Superior? The debate comparing organic food to conventionally grown foods is under constant speculation.  I frequently read and hear in the mainstream news that there is no proof to suggest that organically grown foods are in any way superior to their conventionally grown counterparts. So, I decided I would actually take a look at the research for myself and make my own conclusions.  I wanted to look at independent, third party research, not sponsored research programmes that held any bias.  This is what I found.   Health Benefits of Vitamin B6 Vitamin B6 is also known as Pyridoxine.  This vitamin is especially important for women since it’s been shown to be involved in hormone and water balance. Pyridoxine is stable in acids, somewhat less stable in alkaline, but easily destroyed in ultraviolet light (sunlight), and depleted with cooking and improper food storage. What Affects Absorption? Absorption takes place in the small intestine, but if you are fasting or on a food reduced diet, then it is highly likely that you will be deficient as the excess is usually excreted in the urine within 8 hours.   A little is retained within the muscles, however, being a water soluble vitamin, most will be lost. Health Benefits of Vitamin B5 Vitamin B5, also known as Pantothenic acid, is present in all living cells and important to cell metabolism.  The name pantothenic acid comes from the Greek word meaning “everywhere”, referring to its wide availability in foods. It is stable to moist heat and oxidation but destroyed by acids, such as vinegar or alkalis such as baking soda.  It is also destroyed by dry heat.  So, in many wholefoods, Vitamin B5 is readily available.   Health Benefits of Vitamin B3 As mentioned in our previous information leaflets on the Vitamin B family, B3 is also a water soluble vitamin. Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, was first isolated during oxidization of nicotine from tobacco, and was thus given the name nicotinic acid vitamin.  Shortly it’s name was shortened to Niacin.  However, it is important to note that this vitamin is not remotely related to the molecule nicotine!
